Can anyone explain how a psychiatrist actually helps with depression?

I've been dealing with what I think may be depression for several months now, and I'm starting to realize that it's affecting more areas of my life than I initially admitted to myself. My energy is low most days, I struggle to stay motivated at work, and I've gradually stopped enjoying activities that I used to look forward to.
A few people close to me have suggested that I see a psychiatrist, but I'm not entirely sure what that process looks like or how psychiatric treatment helps with depression. Most of what I find online talks about medication, but I assume there's more to it than simply getting a prescription.
For those who have worked with a psychiatrist for depression, what did the experience actually involve? Did the psychiatrist help you understand what was contributing to your symptoms, monitor your progress, and adjust treatment over time? I'm trying to get a realistic picture of what to expect if I decide to make an appointment.
One reason I've hesitated is that I've never sought mental health treatment before, so the whole process feels a little intimidating. I'd appreciate hearing from people who were in a similar position and what changed after they finally reached out for professional help.
If you've gone through psychiatric treatment for depression, did you find it helpful in improving your daily life, relationships, or ability to function day to day? I'd really value any firsthand experiences or advice.
